About the Art
What the artist saysWith this series, I connect my own experience of journal keeping with that of my late father, as captured in photographs, the written word, and moments of translucent fabric. The way we document ourselves can be as fragile and varied as the lives we live, but even so the markings of this documentation take on a material form in our memory that is as detailed as it is iridescent.
Why we like itThe layers of Kate’s photo collages are as varied and complex as the experiences that make up her storied past, especially as she reconnects with her late father through their mutual passion for journal keeping. We love the complexity of her materials and the way her silhouettes work within the manipulated photographic imagery she has included as well as that which has been removed.
Where we hang itHang this one anywhere you can get up close and personal with it. The intricate details of this series and Kate’s manipulation of her materials should be inspected and respected.
About the Artist
Kate McCammon
Born in the small town of Bridgeport, West Virginia, Kate McCammon learned early on that she had a knack for creating and a passion for art. This passion led her to a BFA in Painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) followed by a MFA in Studio Art from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA). She has been awarded a number of residencies, including the Starry Night Residency Program in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico; the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice, Italy; and the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont. Upon earning her Master’s degree, she has been included in a number of solo and group exhibitions across the country. Now living in Philadelphia, she works as PAFA’s Student Experience Coordinator while maintaining her studio practice. With a painter’s mentality, she is currently working with mixed media and photo collage on a body of work that hits close to home—a series of what she refers to as “Journal Portraits” which explores layers of identity and familial narratives.
“With this series, I want to connect not only with others but also with myself around themes that are paradoxically universal and individual at the same time.”
