About the Art

What the artist saysI use the portrait as a site of transformation, juxtaposing tactile flesh with disruptive, foreign elements.
Why we like itDrawing on her training in theology and a decade as an archaeological illustrator, Hemingway paints the Virgin as a figure in flux, where corporeality gives way to blazing halos and ornament in watercolor that is both reverent and unsettling.
Where we hang itThe bold brushwork would suit a whitewashed entryway or hallway where its strong vertical rhythm and radiant halo greet people as they walk in.

About the Artist

Amy Tiffany Hemingway
Amy's practice investigates the intersection of classical portraiture and contemporary surrealism, focusing on internal states and how they manifest across the human body. The artist uses the portrait as a site of transformation, juxtaposing flesh with disruptive, foreign elements.

She holds a Masters degree in Theology from the University of Oxford, and attended drawing classes at the Ruskin School of Art. She worked as an Archaeological Illustrator for ten years in the UK and France, before moving to Africa for several years. Her work has exhibited at the Nassau County Museum of Art, New York, and features in private collections in Australia, Canada, Croatia, Dubai, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Miami, Long Island (the Lachaise Foundation), Romania, South Africa and the UK.

“Focusing on portraiture and religious symbolism, I explore emotional experience and the human condition.”
