About the Art

What the artist saysMy work often fluctuates between wild and expressive attacks on the canvas and more pensive explorations of organic shapes. The works in this series were named after the poem by Margaret Atwood called “Spelling.”
Why we like itMorgan expertly navigates thoughtful themes and familiar emotions that come to her in her practice and translates them through abstraction.
Where we hang itMorgan’s abstract works can certainly stand alone on any wall, but they complement one another so well that you should probably buy at least two.

About the Artist

Morgan Auten Smith
Morgan Auten Smith is an abstract painter and elementary art teacher from Georgia. While she knew from a young age that she wanted to be an artist, she started college as an English major, until a late-night editing project changed her mind. The next day, she changed her major to art education.

Through her own joyful take on color and shape, she explores the intersections between individuality and motherhood. Her work is heavily influenced by her family, her interests such as reading and music, and the time she has spent living abroad, specifically in Kandern, Germany. Currently, Morgan resides in Gainesville, Ga with her partner Joshua and twin children, Allistair and Penelope.

“Each gesture, color, movement and material is important to the narrative of the painting.”
