About the Artist

Melissa Smith
Melissa Smith graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing and Roosevelt University with a Master of Arts in Teaching. Her work translates sights, sounds, spaces, places, emotions, interactions, memories, and experiences into abstract representations. She creates art as a means of making sense of the world—to convey feelings and render thoughts which may otherwise be difficult to articulate. Her work has been exhibited throughout the country and can be found in public and private collections across the United States, Canada, France, Germany, and the Dominican Republic. She currently works out of her home studio outside Chicago.

“My work is guided by intuition and incorporates painting, drawing, and collage; the works are anchored by a commitment to abstraction, a love for color, a penchant for mark-making, and a fondness for interesting surface textures. ”
